The Game Engine Matrix: DEVLOG 16.02.2023

If you're involved in independent game development, one thing you'll quickly come to realise is that there are numerous game development solutions today that are freely available to you with generous licenses that allow you to focus on the creativity of your projects and worry less about the licensing aspects of production.

This is important because game development is becoming more and more ubiquitous, and more and more developers are expressing their creative talents and passions as a result of the great amount of free and open source engines available in the game development tech space. 

And choosing the right engine is something that comes after much deliberation and various engine stress tests.

In relation to Touch Paradise XXX: Rewind Demo (originally Pocket Paradise: Latina Sensations), the codebase for the game was developed a few years ago using the AppGameKit Classic (BASIC, C++).

In fact, the Rewind Demo was built upon that very same code base using the AppGameKit engine. 

However moving forward, the decision has been made to build the upcoming games using a new game development solution.

While the decision on which exact engine is yet to be finalized, here are the candidates that are available so far:

- Defold Engine: LUA, C++

- GODOT Engine: C++, C#, GDScript (Python)

- COCOS Creator, COCOS 2DX: C++, JavaScript, TypeScript

- Gideros Mobile: LUA. C++
- Flame Engine (Flutter SDK): Dart language
- Love2D (LÖVE): LUA, C++

These are a few of the most likely candidates that will power the upcoming games.

And in case you were wondering: YES, the next update might very well be built upon a new game engine.

In fact, at this time of writing, one of the aforementioned options above is showing very impressive results when the demo assets were ported over, and attempts were made to re-create the Rewind Demo experience. 

With that being stated, you can expect that in the near future, more details on the subject will be revealed.
